About Historic Augusta, Inc.
Historic Augusta, Inc. was founded in 1965 and is operated by a Board of Trustees lead by a volunteer, elected President, officers and an Executive Committee. It maintains an Executive Director for day-to-day management, under whom works a small staff, currently numbering three full-time and four part-time employees.
The mission of Historic Augusta, Inc. is to preserve historically or architecturally significant structures and sites in Augusta and Richmond County, Georgia.
Historic Augusta’s headquarters is located within the Joseph R. Lamar Boyhood Home (circa 1860), at 415 Seventh Street in downtown, Augusta, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It also owns and operates the adjacent property, the Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson (circa 1859), at 419 Seventh Street, a National Historic Landmark, which is operated as a house museum.
Bachelor’s Degree or higher in liberal arts, marketing, communications, history or related fields. Practical experience working with a public or nonprofit agency.
Experience with public relations, marketing and fund-raising are highly desirable.
The successful applicant will ideally have a special interest and some knowledge of local history and architecture. A familiarity of the interrelationships within organizations and agencies and among similar organizations and agencies in the Augusta community would be helpful.
Important skills include writing, public relations, networking, diplomacy, ability to manage various projects at once. High organizational skills are essential.
Familiarity with basic software applications including Word, Excel, Access, Photoshop, Publisher, Canva or other design soltware. The successful applicant should also have the ability to learn other programs as needed, including Word Press, Past Perfect and other applications that may arise from time to time. Use of a digital camera is required, including organization of photos for current and future uses.
Familiarity with and ability to manage social media such as Facebook, Twitter and other platforms that may become available and desirable will be necessary.
• Annual Events management and coordination including conception, planning, budgeting, volunteer management, execution, and follow-up. Current events include, but may not be limited to:
o Historic Augusta’s Annual Heritage Party for high donor level members and sponsors, held at a private home each spring.
o Historic Augusta’s Annual Downtown Loft Tour, showcasing loft apartments and downtown living, usually held in early May.
o Cotton Ball, an outdoor garden party held on the grounds of a historic home or site each spring, usually in May.
o Perfectly Aged Auction, our largest fundraiser, with a party, a silent auction featuring wines, antiques, trips and experiences, usually in September.
o Walk With the Spirits, first-person interpreted tours of one of Augusta’s historic cemeteries, usually held in October.
o Annual Meeting, including annual reports, elections of officers and Trustees, and annual awards.
• Special Events management and coordination. From time to time there will be a need to plan and implement various special events, including workshops, lectures, tours, or other activities that further the mission of Historic Augusta, Inc.
• Development, grant writing and administration. Working with the Executive Director and other staff, funding opportunities will be identified, and when appropriate, applied for as a source of revenue for Historic Augusta, Inc. Those particularly related to general operating funds and capital requests will be prepared for and managed by the Programs and Marketing Director.
• Marketing and publicizing all Historic Augusta events, programs, activities and accomplishments through press releases, advertisements, and interviews through any available and desirable new media, including newspapers, television, radio, internet, social media or other forms of communication.
• The Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson is an integral part of the operations of Historic Augusta, Inc. Duties of the Programs and Marketing Director include the promotion of, and coordination of special events for the museum in cooperation with other staff and volunteers. Special events often include promotions on President’s Day, an annual Woodrow Wilson lecture in November, and during the Christmas holidays. From time to time under the heading of the Wilson House, other special events may be planned and will become part of the duties of the Programs and Marketing Director.
• Assist Executive Director and other staff as needed and as directed by the Executive Director.
• Historic Augusta News is a printed magazine quality publication that is published about three times annually. Duties for the Programs and Marketing Director include: coordination of articles, many of which will be written by the Programs and Marketing Director; coordination of photographs used in the publication; coordination with the graphic designers; coordination of printing; coordination of distribution with the Administrative Assistant.
• The Preservationist, an E-News digital publication that is distributed roughly once each month, featuring two or three current events or activities and preservation topics. This is often done with other staff members.
• Wilson House E-News, a digital publication that is distributed roughly quarterly to promote programs and activities at the Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson including featured topics, upcoming events, historical information and tour times.
The Programs and Marketing Director works under the direct supervision of the Executive Director in all areas, and is expected to represent the organization as delegated by the Executive Director with regard to assisting other agencies, organizations and committees. As one of a small staff, assisting other staff members from time to time in order to meet deadlines, or in order to complete important tasks, particularly bulk mailings, will also be expected.
This is a full time position. Benefits shall be in accordance with the Personnel Policy of Historic Augusta, Inc. and negotiated at the time of hiring. All new employees are subject to a three-month trial period.
